New Continuing Education Requirement for the MHRT/C Certificate

The Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community (MHRT/C) certificate is required for people who provide a range of services for adults with serious mental illness in community settings. The Maine Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHS) sponsors this certification program, which has been undergoing a complete redesign. One of the upgrades to the program is a continuing education (CE) requirement for full certificate renewal every two years.

Since January 1, 2018, all new full MHRT/C certificates have been issued with a two-year expiration date and a CE requirement for renewal. (The CE requirement is only for Full MHRT/C certificates, not Provisional.) Certificates that were issued prior to January 2018 are being reissued with a two-year expiration date and the CE requirement for renewal.

The CE requirement is 18 hours of training/education related to the new competency domains. The training must be completed during the certificate's two-year expiration period, and at least four of the hours must be in Ethics. View the list of the new competency domains here: MHRT-C Competencies

CE training can be a workshop, a conference, a non-academic training, or an agency sponsored in-service learning session. It can be face to face or online. We've developed a checklist with more specific details. View the checklist here: CE Checklist 2019

The Maine Behavioral Health Workforce Development Collaborative (MBHWDC) is an excellent place to find CE training resources. Just go to the Training tab of this website.
